Map Staffordshire Moorlands Derbyshire Dales High Peak Rural Action Zone

High Peak mapHigh Peak

Located on the north west tip of Derbyshire, most of the Borough lies inside the Peak District National Park and the area’s outstanding scenery means that tourism is an important part of the local economy.

The historic spa town of Buxton lies within the borough and many of the settlements west of Buxton are within commuting distance of the Manchester conurbation.

The borough was formed in 1974 by absorbing the municipal boroughs of Buxton and Glossop, the urban districts of New Mills and Whaley Bridge and the rural district of Chapel-en-le-Frith.

Currently the boundaries of High Peak Borough Council and the parliamentary constituency of High Peak differ somewhat in the south-east, though this will change at the next election.  The MP for High Peak is Tom Levitt.

The population is around 91,000.
